Taxi Driver Forces Colleague to Drop Off Passengers Under Threats in Playa del Carmen

A taxi driver approaches another vehicle to threaten the driver in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver affiliated with the Lázaro Cardenas del Rio union forced a fellow driver to drop off passengers under threats, escalating ongoing tensions among local taxi operators.

The incident occurred near the ADO alternate terminal on 20th Avenue and 12th Street. A video circulating on social media shows the driver of taxi number 65 confronting a colleague who had picked up passengers near the terminal. The aggressor warned the other driver that he was not allowed to pick up fares in that area.

The conflict extends beyond competition with ride-hailing services like Uber. Taxi drivers from designated stands in tourist zones are also prohibiting colleagues who serve residential neighborhoods from picking up passengers on Avenidas 10, 15, and 20.

Passengers arriving at the ADO terminal often walk to other streets to find taxis that charge lower fares than those from official stands. However, stand drivers threaten and intimidate their colleagues to prevent them from serving those passengers.
