Woman Tracks Stolen Phone to Puerto Morelos, Leads Police to Suspect

Police officers detain a man on a highway in Puerto Morelos after a woman tracked her stolen cellphone via GPS

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A foreign man was arrested early Wednesday after a woman tracked her stolen cellphone via GPS and followed him to a neighboring town, leading police to make the capture.

The suspect, believed to be from Puerto Rico, entered a pharmacy on Yaxchilan Avenue in downtown Cancun, according to authorities. After pretending to make a purchase, he snatched a phone from an employee and fled the store.

The victim used the phone’s GPS location to track the device and saw that the man had boarded a Cancun-Puerto Morelos bus. She alerted authorities and followed the vehicle.

On the federal highway in Puerto Morelos, the woman flagged down the bus and told the driver that a passenger had stolen her phone. The driver agreed to wait for police.

Minutes later, municipal police and Mexican Navy personnel arrived and detained the suspect, who handed over the phone after being identified by the victim. The woman said she would press charges.
