Cancun, Quintana Roo — A woman who suffered severe burns in an apartment fire in Cancun last month has died, bringing the death toll from the incident to three, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
Maria Gladys, 49, died at Hospital General after spending 14 days in intensive care following the March 31 fire in the Paseos del Mar neighborhood. She had sustained burns covering approximately 50 percent of her body, including her chest, back, and limbs.
Doctors were unable to revive her after her condition deteriorated overnight, despite their efforts.
The fire broke out in an apartment in supermanzana 251 in the early hours of March 31, prompting a large-scale response from emergency services. Upon arrival, firefighters and rescue personnel discovered that a woman and her son had already died in the blaze.
Maria Gladys and a minor were rushed to Hospital General in a municipal police patrol vehicle. The child remains hospitalized and continues to receive medical care.
Her body has been transferred to the forensic medical service, where family members can claim it in the coming hours.
