Canine Unit Finds 10 Kilos of Cocaine Hidden in Suitcase at Cancún Airport

A security officer and a sniffer dog inspect a suitcase at Cancún International Airport after cocaine was found in a hidden compartment

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Customs officers at Cancún International Airport seized nearly 10 kilos of white powder that tested as cocaine after a sniffer dog detected a hidden compartment in a passenger’s suitcase, authorities said.

The discovery was made during routine baggage inspections carried out by personnel from Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM), working with National Guard officers and the federal Public Security Department (SSPC).

According to official accounts, the suitcase was screened with X-ray equipment, and operators spotted irregularities in its structure that suggested a concealed compartment. Officers then carried out a closer physical inspection and called in a canine unit, which located the hidden section.

Roughly 10 kilos of white powder were found inside the double bottom of the luggage, in a space not visible to the naked eye.

Substance confirmed as cocaine

Specialized technical equipment was used to analyze the substance, and results were consistent with cocaine hydrochloride. The material was seized by the authorities.

The passenger carrying the suitcase was detained and handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with the confiscated drug, so that an investigation file could be opened and the traveler’s legal status determined.

Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or nationality, nor the destination the person intended to travel to.

The seizure adds to the screening operations at Cancún’s airport, one of Mexico’s busiest arrival and departure points for passengers, where authorities keep permanent checks in place to detect the movement of illicit substances.

The investigation now rests with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which must establish where the drug came from and determine any criminal responsibility.
