Costa Mujeres, Isla Mujeres — A 41-year-old American tourist died early Saturday after falling into a pool at the Dreams Playa Mujeres hotel in Costa Mujeres, on the mainland portion of Isla Mujeres.
Hotel staff alerted emergency services at around 6:30 a.m. after finding a guest floating in the pool. Municipal police officers and private paramedics responded but confirmed the man had no vital signs.
The victim was identified as Dave Thomas, a US citizen. According to hotel staff, a female guest had reported her partner missing shortly before, prompting an internal search of the resort.
Security camera footage showed Thomas falling into the pool around 4 a.m. The pool, located in a common area, is approximately 13 feet (4 meters) deep, raising questions about safety measures at the site.
Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office removed the body and transported it to the forensic medical service for an autopsy. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the death.
