Cancun, Quintana Roo — Reports of gunfire in the Supermanzana 23 neighborhood prompted a large police response Saturday evening, though no injuries were found at the scene.
Residents called 911 after hearing what they initially described as a shootout between armed individuals. State police officers arrived first and found no injured or deceased persons.
Officers cordoned off the intersection of Calle 8 with Calles Caoba and Granadillo to preserve evidence, recovering at least five spent shell casings.
According to neighbors, suspects in a vehicle — described only vaguely — fired at another person, who returned fire. However, the number of casings found did not match the volume expected from an exchange of gunfire, leading authorities to suspect it was an attempted execution.
Another account suggests the attack was directed at a specific individual, who fled toward Market 23 and escaped. The attackers also fled.
Municipal police and Mexican Navy personnel arrived shortly after and launched a search operation for the perpetrators.
Forensic investigators from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene for evidence to support the investigation.
