Cancún, Quintana Roo — Two men were arrested at a parcel delivery shop in this resort city after they turned up to collect a package that turned out to hold more than 82 kilograms of marijuana, federal prosecutors said.

A control judge ordered the pair — identified only as Víctor “N” and Héctor “N” under Mexican naming conventions — to stand trial on drugs charges, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) said.

The arrests took place at a business on Avenida Oaxantun in Supermanzana 35, where the men arrived to claim a shipment that drew the suspicion of police officers at the scene. Inspecting the consignment, authorities seized 82 kilograms, 573 grams and 6 milligrams of marijuana.

After the arrests, both men and the confiscated drug were handed over to the federal Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The FGR, acting through its regional control unit (FECOR) in Quintana Roo, presented the evidence that led to charges of crimes against health in the form of possession of marijuana intended for transport.

After reviewing the evidence, the judge bound the two men over to trial, imposed automatic pretrial detention and set a one-month deadline for the close of the supplementary investigation.

Under Mexican due process, both defendants are presumed innocent until a final verdict is handed down in their case.
