Two Armed Suspects Arrested in Cancun as Residents Try to Block Police
Cancun, Quintana Roo — Police arrested two men on weapons charges in the Corales neighborhood Monday afternoon, sparking a confrontation with residents who tried to block the arrest by throwing stones and blocking the road.
Authorities responded to reports of gunshots in the Supermanzana 77 area of the Los Corales housing complex. Initial reports indicated two people had been shot, prompting municipal police and Mexican Navy personnel to respond.
According to officials, a taxi driver allegedly fired shots into the air. When police arrived, the driver and another person attempted to flee, triggering a Code Red alert to prevent their escape.
Residents of the area attempted to defend the suspects, using stones and sticks to block the roadway and prevent officers from taking them away. After a struggle involving pushing and flying stones, police managed to push through.
The two suspects were taken to municipal police headquarters. Authorities confirmed they seized a firearm with magazines. The case has been turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
