Cancun, Quintana Roo — The arrest of a 19-year-old man in Cancun has allowed authorities to link a firearm to a series of violent attacks that left at least seven people dead and several injured across Benito Juarez and Puerto Morelos.

The suspect, identified as Jose Enrique “N,” alias “Kike,” is originally from San Luis Potosi. Police captured him in the supermanzana 233 neighborhood in possession of dried marijuana and a 9mm pistol allegedly used in multiple crimes.

According to the State Prosecutor’s Office, ballistic tests on the weapon using the IBIS system matched nine violent incidents in recent months — eight in Cancun and one in Puerto Morelos.

Among the linked cases is the murder of Jose Martin, alias “La Tusa,” shot dead in supermanzana 100, and the killing of Kevin inside a bar in supermanzana 221, where he suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Another suspect, Efren Ariel “N,” alias “El Burro,” had already been processed for that attack.

Authorities also tied the weapon to the double homicide of Reyner Miguel and Karen Cristina in supermanzana 103, as well as another armed attack near the tianguis market in supermanzana 100, where Juan Francisco and Luis died from multiple gunshot wounds. Another related crime was the murder of Angel Antonio, attacked at a food stall in supermanzana 93.

In addition to the homicides, the Prosecutor’s Office said the weapon was used in an attempted execution of Rey Angel, who survived after being shot in the leg in supermanzana 245.

Investigators believe all the attacks stem from disputes between drug-dealing groups in the northern part of the state.

The suspect has been handed over to a judge who will determine his legal status while investigations continue into his possible involvement in other violent incidents in these municipalities.
