Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 49-year-old street food vendor known as “Don Ruben” was fatally shot outside his home in the Tres Marias neighborhood late Sunday night.
The victim, who ran a snack stall in the Tierra Maya housing development, was killed just a few meters from Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue.
According to preliminary reports, the shooting happened shortly before midnight. The victim had stepped outside after a man called to him from the entrance of his house and asked if he had a room for rent. When Don Ruben said he did not have any rooms and asked who had sent the man, the suspect replied “Jesma” before firing three shots.
Initial reports placed the attack between the Jordan and Pedregal neighborhoods, prompting a large mobilization of police forces. Officers eventually found the victim at the entrance of a home with an open black gate.
Paramedics with ERUM, the local emergency medical service, tried to provide aid but confirmed that the man showed no vital signs.
