Tulum, Quintana Roo — Local authorities have distributed new uniforms and tactical equipment to police officers as part of a security reinforcement effort that officials say has led to an 83% reduction in homicides in the municipality.
Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo led the handover of gear to officers from the Public Security and Citizen Protection Department, an initiative coordinated with the state government under Governor Mara Lezama. The mayor emphasized the importance of intergovernmental cooperation in maintaining public safety.
“We appreciate the state government’s support and reaffirm our commitment to working together for the peace of our citizens,” Castañón Trejo said during the event.
He urged police to continue performing their duties responsibly while coordinating with municipal, state, and federal authorities.
Public Security Secretary Edgar Aguilar Rico detailed the equipment distributed, which included:
- 129 pairs of boots
- 61 tactical shirts
- 239 caps
- 120 pairs of pants
- 183 T-shirts
Additional tactical gear included handcuffs, gloves, elbow pads, knee pads, flashlights, goggles, and riot control equipment.
Aguilar Rico said these tools will enhance the police force’s operational capacity and improve their response to dangerous situations.
Officials attributed the equipment distribution and coordinated security operations to significant crime reductions in Tulum, reporting an 83% decrease in intentional homicides and an 80% drop in high-impact crimes.
