Cozumel Museum Unveils Rafael Ontiveros Exhibition Spanning 33 Years of Artistic Exploration

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation inaugurated the pictorial exhibition “Periplo” by artist Rafael Ontiveros on Friday evening, showcasing 33 years of creative work that the artist describes not as a linear trajectory but as constant movement.

The exhibition invites visitors to approach the work from a different perspective. According to poet Agustín Olvido, the collection proposes immersion in an artistic process of permanent construction rather than narrating a story. “Periplo” transcends traditional notions of time in art, becoming an experience where works dialogue with each other and with viewers.

During the inauguration, Ontiveros, originally from Querétaro state, thanked the foundation for providing space to share his work. He explained that his visual language began transforming 33 years ago when he discovered aerosol spray techniques, which marked his life and artistic path.

Inspired by characters, faces, and figures he observed on the streets, Ontiveros incorporated new techniques that allowed him to continue drawing from diverse perspectives—sometimes comic, political, and psychological—ultimately consolidating art as his second language.

Before the Cozumel audience seeking new artistic expressions, foundation counselor Alejandro Queb Franco presented the artist with recognition for his career and cultural contributions. He was joined by Christian Köhl Graf, gallerist and art promoter and founder of Haus Der Kunst Guadalajara and Director of Amalgama Proyecta, along with Cochu Aparicio, founder of the BenAmil rural artist residency in the Caribbean, El Cedral, and Cozumel museographer Satoko Kitamura.

Museum of the Island Director Isela Carrillo Cupul formally declared the exhibition open on behalf of foundation General Director Juanita Alonso Marrufo, who has reiterated that the venue remains open to all artistic expressions from both local and visiting creators. The goal is to guarantee community access to art, aligning with the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The “Periplo” exhibition will remain open to the public through June. Admission is free for all visitors, with hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, alongside other artistic displays available at the museum.
