Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Tulum municipal government has installed 10 containers in the hotel zone to strengthen sargassum collection and management efforts, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo announced during a coastal inspection tour.
Accompanied by Zofemat General Director David Buchanan, the mayor oversaw cleanup operations and highlighted coordination between authorities and the hotel sector to maintain the destination’s beaches in optimal condition.
Over 750 Tons Collected in March
Officials reported that the containers are strategically distributed throughout the hotel zone, helping organize sargassum storage and facilitate transport to final disposal sites.
The Zofemat team has collected 750 tons of sargassum and made over 100 container-emptying trips so far in March, results that reflect ongoing work by operational staff.
The Zofemat director noted that hoteliers’ participation has been key to the infrastructure’s operation, enabling better organization in beach cleaning and seaweed management.
Municipal authorities stated these actions are part of a comprehensive strategy to keep beaches clean, protect the environment, and preserve the quality of the tourist destination, considered one of Mexico’s most important.
