Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 31-year-old tourist from Florida was rescued from the Nichupté lagoon Thursday after jumping into the water while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, authorities said.
The man, identified as John, jumped into the lagoon near the Rosa Negra restaurant around noon, sustaining cuts to his neck. Emergency services, including firefighters and civil protection personnel, responded to the scene.
Rescuers found the tourist floating under a dock with cuts on his neck. He was aggressive and refused help, officials said. Paramedics from a private ambulance treated him before transporting him to a general hospital. Preliminary reports indicated he was intoxicated with narcotics and alcohol.
Civil protection requested assistance from the port captaincy, and a boat from the Aquaworld marina helped transport rescue personnel to the man’s location. He was pulled from the water, placed on a stretcher, and moved to a private ambulance. Paramedics said his injuries were superficial.
The incident caused tension among onlookers due to the risk of crocodile attacks and the bleeding wounds on the man’s neck. Tourist police were also present and gathered information for the investigation.
