Tulum, Quintana Roo — Against the odds, the Malix Tulum rugby team has won its second consecutive national championship in the second force category of the Mexican Rugby Federation tournament, a feat achieved despite training without a home field and with limited resources.
The club, formally affiliated only two years ago, has secured back-to-back titles through the consistent effort of its players, who prepare without dedicated facilities and on a tight budget.
Winning Without a Home Field
Malix currently trains at the municipal sports complex, sharing space with other disciplines, which reduces practice hours and disrupts training continuity.
Despite these challenges, the program has grown to include about 60 players in men’s and women’s divisions, and nearly 80 when counting youth categories.
Building From the Ground Up
The team has focused on developing young talent, with children as young as 2 years old participating, along with youth programs aimed at competing in national tournaments. Recently, two players took part in qualifiers for the National Olympiad as part of this development pipeline.
Financial Hurdles
Lack of funding remains a major obstacle. Travel costs, registration fees, and logistics have limited the team’s ability to compete outside the state.
Next Challenge
Following their championship, Malix Tulum is preparing for the Cancún Sevens tournament, where they aim to maintain their competitive level.
