Third Suspect Arrested in Isla Mujeres Taxi Extortion Ring

State prosecutor Raciel Lopez Salazar announcing the arrest of a third suspect in the Isla Mujeres taxi extortion ring

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A third suspect linked to an extortion ring that authorities say targeted taxi drivers in Isla Mujeres has been arrested in Cancún.

Daniel Jesús “N,” also known as “Shaggy,” was taken into custody last week on drug possession charges while driving in Cancún, according to State Prosecutor Raciel López Salazar.

López Salazar said Monday that Daniel Jesús “N” extorted approximately 150 taxi drivers daily, demanding 200 pesos (about $11) from each driver. The scheme netted the gang an estimated 30,000 pesos (about $1,650) per day, he added.

The suspect is the third member of the extortion group to be arrested. Three days earlier, Arturo Misael, alias “Guamuchil,” was located and detained in Mérida, Yucatán. Misael was considered the right-hand man of Héctor Elías Flores, alias “El 15,” who has been in police custody since October.

Authorities said the gang leaders are originally from Sinaloa state but operated from Mérida. The extortion ring also targeted taxi drivers operating in Cancún and Lázaro Cárdenas.
