Residential street in Villas del Mar, Cancun, where a suspected thief was beaten to death by residents

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man died Wednesday night after residents of the Villas del Mar neighborhood detained and beat him for allegedly attempting to break into a home, authorities said.

The incident occurred on Segunda Privada El Peral in the Supermanzana 248 area. According to initial reports, residents caught the man trying to enter a house, subdued him, tied him up, and assaulted him before leaving him next to a utility pole belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

When municipal police and paramedics arrived, they found the man, estimated to be around 30 years old, with no vital signs. He had multiple injuries, though an autopsy will determine the official cause of death.

State Prosecutor’s Office personnel processed the scene and removed the body to the forensic medical service, where it remains unidentified.

During the initial investigation, none of the residents agreed to give statements or identify those involved in the assault. Authorities continue to investigate to determine responsibility.
