Two Buses Collide in Cancun, Injuring Five

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A collision between two buses from different public transit lines at a Cancun intersection left five people injured Sunday night, authorities said.

The buses were traveling in the same direction on Leona Vicario Avenue when the driver of a Turicun bus rear-ended an Autocar bus at the crossing with Chac Mool Avenue, in the Supermanzana 219 area. The Turicun bus, unit 868, was driven by Luis, 34; the Autocar bus, unit 538, was driven by Marvin, 32. Municipal traffic officials said Luis failed to maintain a safe following distance.

Emergency services received a report of the crash at around 8 p.m. and dispatched two private ambulances, paramedics and municipal traffic officers to the scene. A preliminary count reported eight injured passengers, but medics later confirmed that five people — three women and two men — had been hurt.

The Turicun bus sustained damage to its front right side, including a shattered windshield and side window. Some passengers struck the seats inside the buses during the impact.

The five injured passengers were taken to a private hospital for evaluation; none appeared to have serious injuries. Traffic investigators began working to determine fault, while insurance adjusters for both companies handled the claims for damages and medical expenses.
