Cancún, Quintana Roo — A vehicle stolen at gunpoint from an Uber driver Thursday night was found abandoned Friday on Francisco I. Madero Avenue in Cancun, but the passenger who was taken with it remains missing.
The white Chevrolet Onix was located Friday in front of the Cobá elementary school on Francisco I. Madero Avenue, known locally as Ruta 4. Municipal police officers confirmed through the license plates that it was the vehicle reported stolen the night before.
The Uber driver told police that Thursday night he was intercepted by two vehicles carrying armed individuals on Avenida 127. The suspects forced him out of the car. The passenger tried to run away but was caught and forced into the vehicle, which the group then drove off.
A search operation was launched after the 911 call, but officers couldn’t locate the vehicle until Friday afternoon.
Officers cordoned off the area and notified the State Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators opened the trunk and inspected the vehicle but found no trace of the passenger. The car was then towed and seized by prosecutors as part of the investigation.
