Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The head of Quintana Roo’s Education Secretariat (SEQ), Elda Xix Euán, confirmed an alleged rape at the Manuel Ávila Camacho primary school in the municipality of Bacalar.
According to parents, the alleged assault was carried out by other students, and they accuse teachers of covering up the incident. Parents said they requested intervention from education authorities on Thursday, but when officials failed to act promptly, they suspended school activities, closed the school, and threatened to block the short road to Mérida.
Parents identified teachers with initials FMU and HRRR, as well as the school principal MAXB, as trying to minimize the incident to prevent a scandal.
They are demanding that the case be handled with the seriousness it deserves and that the law be applied against those responsible, including criminal proceedings and removal of the teachers and principal. They also called for immediate intervention by the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) and the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF) to provide support for the affected student and family.
Parents also accused local delegate Antonio Marcelino Yam Moo of ignoring the case.
Xix Euán said the situation is “under control” and that protocols were applied promptly. “We attended to it promptly when we learned of it; we applied the protocols directly and immediately,” she said. She noted that other information has circulated but the SEQ cannot confirm or deny it because the investigation falls under another authority.
She added that parents traveled to Chetumal and she will hold meetings with them to address the incident.
Xix Euán revealed that so far this year, three cases of sexual abuse have been recorded in different municipalities of Quintana Roo, all under investigation by the FGE.
The Manuel Ávila Camacho community is an agricultural locality in Bacalar with about 1,200 residents, located 60.9 kilometers from the municipal seat.
