Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A group of tourists at an ecological park in Bacalar got an unexpected wildlife encounter this week when a snake appeared on the thatched roof of a palapa shelter.
Park personnel quickly identified the reptile as a non-venomous rat snake, a species known for hunting small rodents and occasionally amphibians. The snake was apparently following a small frog that had taken refuge among the roof beams.
The incident highlighted the rich biodiversity of Bacalar beyond its famous turquoise lagoon. Wildlife guides emphasize that such encounters should be observed with curiosity and respect, without interfering with the animal.
After brief observation, park staff captured the snake and relocated it to a safe area away from visitors.
