Cancún, Quintana Roo — A new report on fake travel offers has found that Cancún is the top destination for cyber fraud in Mexico, accounting for 42.9% of all identified cases — nearly one in every two incidents.
The report, titled “Fake Travel Offers: The Most Popular Destinations,” analyzed cases of travel-related cyber fraud across the country. After Cancún, the most targeted destinations were Acapulco (7.8%), Huatulco (6.9%), and Puerto Vallarta (6.4%). The top four destinations together account for 64% of all detected frauds, the report states.
The Federal Tourism Secretariat reported that victims in Quintana Roo lose between 5,000 and 2 million Mexican pesos per scam. Cybersecurity experts warn that fraudsters are increasingly using artificial intelligence, malicious QR codes, fake customer service lines, and phishing messages via WhatsApp, SMS, and email that appear to come from airlines, hotels, or booking platforms.
During the Easter holiday period, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office dismantled a fraud network after months of investigation. The case began on March 20 when a couple filed a complaint. They received an attractive offer by phone and spent 90 minutes on the call before making a payment. The bank is currently investigating possible refunds, and prosecutors are analyzing information to determine if more individuals are involved.
The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef) in Quintana Roo said its staff is currently on vacation and has not yet received reports of fraud, officials noted.
