Quintana Roo Rotates Prison Directors to Strengthen Security and Prevent Corruption

Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo government has rotated directors among the state’s prisons as part of a reorganization aimed at strengthening security and preventing corruption, officials announced.

Julio César Gómez, Secretary of Citizen Security, confirmed the changes, stating they are part of an ongoing strategy to transform the prison system. “We are working within the Social Reintegration Centers and have this permanent strategy. We had a rotation of directors and continue working on the transformation strategy of the penitentiary system,” he said.

Gómez explained that the rotation allows prison administrators to share experiences and implement new management strategies to create a more efficient system focused on social reintegration. He added that it helps prevent situations that could lead to corruption.

The reorganization within the Citizen Security Department aims to improve the operation of Social Reintegration Centers, enhance internal security, and raise the quality of services provided to both staff and inmates.

Meanwhile, the Quintana Roo government is seeking international certification from the American Correctional Association (ACA) for the Cozumel prison. If successful, it would become the first prison in the state to achieve this recognition.

The ACA certification validates that a prison meets international standards for security, order, health, and human rights. It also promotes permanent audits, infrastructure improvements, and professionalization processes, with certification valid for three years.
