Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Congress is reviewing a proposal to restrict cellphone use in elementary and middle schools, aiming to reduce classroom distractions and support students’ academic and emotional development.
Local lawmaker Hugo Alday introduced the initiative during a forum on social media, disinformation and democracy at Unimaat University. He said excessive mobile device use directly affects students’ concentration, academic performance and social interaction.
Alday noted the proposal draws on policies in New Zealand, Spain and several U.S. states, as well as a similar measure under review in Mexico’s Senate.
He warned that unrestricted cellphone use also increases minors’ exposure to online risks and can lead to technology dependence. Alday argued it is necessary to restore schools as spaces for learning, social interaction and comprehensive development.
