Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Taxi drivers chased down and detained a man accused of groping a woman as she walked home in the Ejidal neighborhood, then handed him over to municipal police, authorities said.
According to preliminary reports, the woman was walking along Avenida Constituyentes, between Calles 80 and 85 in the Ejido, when the man approached her unexpectedly and tried to grope her.
The man fled after the assault, but the woman called for help. Several taxi drivers who witnessed the incident chased him to the door of his own home and held him there.
Neighbors called 911, and officers from the Public Security Department arrived minutes later. Witnesses said the man was intoxicated and took advantage of a moment when the woman was distracted to grope her.
The taxi drivers turned the suspect over to police, who placed him in the bed of a patrol truck and took him to the holding cells. He was then handed over to the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office for investigation.
Officers urged the woman to file a formal complaint with authorities so the case can set a precedent against the suspect.
