Cancún, Quintana Roo — A gas leak at the Fairfield hotel in downtown Cancún forced the evacuation of about 70 guests and employees, and authorities also cleared the neighboring Wyndham hotel as a precaution.
Authorities detected a buildup of gas in the underground area of the property, located on Avenida Tulum at Calle Viento in Supermanzana 4, and ordered both buildings emptied. Preliminary findings suggest a fault in the gas installation caused the leak.
Paramedics from the Emergency Medical Rescue Squad (ERUM) treated one person for possible gas inhalation. Civil Protection rescuers also attended to a woman, though officials did not specify what symptoms she had or whether either person required hospital treatment.
Firefighters worked to control the leak, while Cancún municipal police and State Police helped respond to the emergency.
Civil Protection will inspect the facilities to determine the cause of the incident and to check whether any irregularities exist that could warrant a sanction.
