Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts (IMCAP) will inaugurate the exhibition “Queer: Art, Memory and Resistance” at the Playa del Carmen Art Gallery, running from June 15 to 27 as part of LGBT+ Pride Month programming.

IMCAP Director General Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive cultural spaces, aligning with the municipal government’s vision under Mayor Estefanía Mercado. “Playa del Carmen is a destination recognized for its openness and diversity,” he said.

The show brings together four artists working in different contemporary art forms: Martín Salazar López (painting), Iván Castelán (video installation), Magdiel Cabañas (documentary photography) and Isaac Barreras (editorial photography).

Themes include the evolution of flags representing the sexual diversity movement, the historical memory of Pride marches in Playa del Carmen, and reflections on identity, bodily sovereignty and cross-dressing.

The exhibition is part of IMCAP’s diversity cultural programming, coordinated by Silvio Hernández.

The Playa del Carmen Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
