GPS Leads Police to Rental Car Reported Stolen in Cancún; Two Arrested in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A rental car that was never returned to its owner in Cancún was tracked down in Playa del Carmen using its GPS system, leading police to arrest a man and a woman and seize two vehicles, authorities said.

The operation unfolded in the Ejidal neighborhood on Avenida Constituyentes, between Calle 105 and Calle 110, where officers from the Public Security Department (SSC) moved in after the owner filed a report.

According to preliminary information, the car had been rented out in Cancún, but the renter allegedly failed to return it and later handed the vehicle to third parties as payment for a debt. When the owner realized the car was missing, he used the GPS tracking device installed in the vehicle to locate it and began monitoring its movements in real time.

The owner’s suspicions grew when the tracking system registered movements suggesting someone was trying to remove or disable the GPS device, apparently to stop the tracking. He alerted authorities and provided the car’s exact location.

SSC officers arrived at the site and found the vehicle, which the owner positively identified as the car rented in Cancún. Police detained a man and a woman who were preliminarily linked to the case. Officers also seized a second vehicle found at the scene that may be connected to the investigation.

The two suspects and both vehicles were taken to the corresponding facilities and handed over to the competent authorities. The Public Prosecutor’s Office will build the investigation file, determine the detainees’ legal status and assign any responsibilities. Investigators will also seek to establish the role of the original renter and how the vehicle ended up in the hands of third parties.
