Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced Friday that she married former Mexican basketball star Eduardo Nájera in a civil ceremony at the city’s registry office.
The mayor shared the news in an emotional video posted to her social media accounts, showing preparations and the wedding itself, attended by family, friends, and municipal officials.
“Playa del Carmen family, today I’m marrying the most incredible man in the world!” the visibly moved mayor said in the video.
Both Mercado’s wedding dress and Nájera’s suit were handmade by Maya artisans from the X-Pichil community in Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality.
Officials who witnessed the ceremony included councilman Fernando Muñoz Calero, municipal secretary general Luis Herrera Quiam, and municipal treasurer Javier Regalado Hendricks, among others.
The video shows the couple exchanging vows and later greeting and taking photos with citizens present at the New Municipal Palace.
The wedding represents a significant event in the mayor’s life, who has received numerous expressions of affection and congratulatory messages since the afternoon ceremony.
