Playa del Carmen Launches ‘Parquemanía’ to Revive Public Parks

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado has launched “Parquemanía,” a program aimed at reclaiming, reactivating and upgrading public spaces through joint efforts by the social and business sectors.

The initiative began at Forjadores Park, where Mercado highlighted the participation of the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC), led by Martín de la Cruz, as the first organization to join the shared-responsibility effort.

Under the arrangement, the CROC will take an active role in the upkeep and revival of Forjadores Park and will promote sports and cultural activities to strengthen community life.

Mercado said Parquemanía forms part of the 2024-2027 Municipal Development Plan and is intended to bring new vitality to the municipality’s parks, consolidating them as safe, accessible and inclusive places for recreation, sport and family gatherings.

At the launch, the mayor stressed the importance of combining government and community efforts to strengthen the care of public spaces and encourage families to use them every day.

The strategy seeks to move beyond the physical improvement of the parks, helping rebuild the social fabric, strengthen a sense of belonging and advance a culture of peace, she said.

Those attending the launch included CROC leader Martín de la Cruz; former professional basketball player Eduardo Nájera; Rusbel Pat, secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation; Estefanía Hernández, secretary of Economic Development; and members of the union organization.
