Pinta o Muere Fills Playa del Carmen Cemetery With Day of the Dead Mural

A large outdoor mural painted on a light blue wall depicts two women with orange flower crowns, one with a sugar skull face, alongside a candle, a church dome, and a white pole in the foreground.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The artists’ collective Pinta o Muere has finished a large Day of the Dead mural at the municipal cemetery in Playa del Carmen, covering its walls with catrinas, cempasúchil flowers, pyramids and animals emblematic of the region.

Richard Conde, a member of the collective, said four artists worked for five days to create roughly 15 pieces integrated into a single composition. The work includes dogs and cats as a tribute to pets, along with a jaguar, a quetzal and a hummingbird that was added at the request of a visitor.

Residents and Tourists Turn Out to Watch

Conde highlighted the response from local residents and the foreign tourists who came to photograph the finished mural. He also thanked the people who approached the artists while they were painting and supported them with food, water and even additional paint.

The mural was created as part of the city’s Day of the Dead celebrations at the cemetery.

Next Project Planned for Avenida 10

Conde said the collective will next create a new work at the corner of Avenida 10 and Calle 2, where it traditionally produces a piece each year addressing themes of the moment. At that site, the group plans to install a sculpture designed to interact with the mural.
