Playa del Carmen Launches ‘HA: Women’s Reading Circle’

Women gathered around a table reading books at the HA Women's Reading Circle in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts (IMCAP) has launched “HA: Women’s Reading Circle,” a new literary space aimed at fostering knowledge and discussion among women.

The initiative, promoted by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, held its first session at the Cultural Center Forum. Karen Alejandra Román Flores, the federal government’s regional coordinator for peace and security, and IMCAP Director General Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar highlighted the need for a dedicated space where women can explore and discuss literature.

During the inaugural meeting, participants read from “El Infinito es un Junco” (Infinity is a Reed) by Spanish author Irene Vallejo. The book, which won the Aragon Prize in 2021 and the Aragonese Letters Prize in 2023, is a deep essay tracing the history of books from papyrus in ancient Egypt to modern libraries. Attendees read excerpts and shared their thoughts, drawing parallels to contemporary times.

The reading circle will meet twice a month at the Cultural Center Forum. Organizers invited all women to join the literary space.
