Five Injured in Collision Between Tourist Van and Car in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Five people were injured Saturday night when a tourist van and a private car collided on the Mérida-Cancún highway bypass near the Maya Train station.

The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m., according to preliminary reports. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.

The impact left one person trapped inside one of the vehicles, requiring rescuers to work carefully to free them.

After the 911 alert, Red Cross paramedics, civil protection personnel, private medical services, firefighters and National Guard agents responded to the scene to treat the occupants.

Rescue teams focused on freeing the trapped person while paramedics assessed the other injured. Once stabilized, the victims were taken to different hospitals for further medical care.

The accident also caused traffic delays in the area, as rescue operations and emergency vehicles forced drivers to slow down.

National Guard agents conducted initial on-site investigations and took statements from the drivers involved. According to preliminary reports, the drivers gave conflicting versions of how the collision occurred, so authorities will need to determine which account matches the physical evidence.

The drivers are expected to be handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine potential liability based on expert reports and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

No fatalities have been reported in connection with the accident. Authorities are analyzing the conditions of the crash to determine whether factors such as driving behavior, road conditions or other circumstances played a role.
