Cancun, Quintana Roo — More than 30,000 Colombian tourists are expected to arrive in Quintana Roo over the coming weeks, driven by the World Cup, according to Colombia’s consul in Cancun, Maria Fernanda Grueso Lugo.

The diplomat said the Mexican Caribbean remains a top choice for Colombian travelers, who are drawn to the region’s beaches, cuisine, nature, and cultural richness. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and the Riviera Maya are among the most requested destinations, along with Maya archaeological sites.

“It’s an average of what we expect, but we’ll see. The numbers are very attractive. People talk about the beaches, the food, the good treatment, and the chance to see Maya ruins. There’s also excellent connectivity to Cozumel, which is very appealing,” Grueso Lugo said.

New transportation links, particularly the Tren Maya, are expected to extend tourists’ stays and allow them to visit other parts of the state. The consul said authorities and tour operators are working together to promote emerging destinations like Bacalar through packages and tours already offered to domestic and international visitors.

The projected influx of Colombian tourists adds to positive forecasts for Quintana Roo’s tourism sector, which anticipates increased visitor numbers and economic benefits from international sporting events.
