No Date Yet for Agency to Replace Aguakan, Says Quintana Roo Official

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state government has won several injunctions against water utility Aguakan, but there is still no timeline for creating the agency that will take over water services in northern Quintana Roo, Government Secretary Cristina Torres said Saturday.

“We can’t say much because it’s tied to litigation, but we’re doing well, very well. We have to have confidence because we’ve won the injunctions,” Torres said. She added that an announcement could come soon with federal government involvement, which she said would benefit the state and help advance the process.

Torres declined to provide details on the new water agency, saying the specifics are still being defined, but stressed it would serve all users across the state.

Regarding the future of the Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA), Torres acknowledged that it remains unclear until the new agency’s scope is determined. “We first have to define the northern part, see where the concession stands, and then determine what happens in the south and how it would integrate if favorable rulings come, after the refinancing of CAPA’s debt,” she said.

She expressed confidence that the new agency will materialize and that CAPA will be strengthened, leading to more reliable drinking water services.
