Neglect and Vandalism Ravage ‘Gota de la Esperanza’ Sculpture in Cancun
Cancun, Quintana Roo — The “Gota de la Esperanza” (Drop of Hope) sculpture, located at the busy intersection of Yaxchilan and Tankah avenues, has fallen into a deplorable state due to time, lack of maintenance, and vandalism.
Created by sculptor Renato Dorfmann more than 20 years ago, the artwork now shows peeling paint, dirt, and graffiti, despite being in one of the city’s most heavily trafficked areas.
According to records related to the piece, the artist never received the full payment agreed upon by the municipality, which led him to stop maintaining the sculpture.
Although the sculpture sits just meters from a Red Cross station and behind a supermarket, its deterioration is evident to drivers, pedestrians, and visitors who pass by daily.
The neglect has drawn criticism from residents, who consider the sculpture an urban symbol that should be rescued and preserved as part of Cancun’s cultural and artistic heritage.
Currently, the piece shows material detachment in several areas, along with paint splatters and damage that significantly affect its original appearance.
