Man Gunned Down in Playa del Carmen; No Arrests Made

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was shot dead in an irregular settlement in this coastal city, and authorities have made no arrests despite launching an operation to find the gunmen, officials said.

Investigators with the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office are handling the case. According to preliminary information, the attack took place in the In House squatter settlement, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on the man for reasons that remain unknown.

Neighbors who learned of the shooting quickly called the authorities. Officers from the Playa del Carmen Public Security Department responded to confirm reports of a person wounded by gunfire in the irregular neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found the man had already died. Police cordoned off the area and notified the State Prosecutor’s Office, which carried out the initial investigative procedures. The body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service for a legally required autopsy.

The victim worked as a motorcycle taxi driver with economic number 211, affiliated with the COR union. He did not appear to be carrying passengers when he was attacked.

Authorities have released no information about what led to the killing. Accounts from residents point to drug sales, saying many dealers live in the irregular settlement.

The killing stands in contrast with the second state-of-the-city report delivered by Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado, in which she said the city is peaceful.
