Playa del Carmen Recycling and Circular Economy Convention Opens at Planetario Sayab

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The second Recycling and Circular Economy Convention opened Friday at the Planetario Sayab, drawing companies, institutions, organizations and residents together for two days of discussion on recycling, environmental innovation and circular economy models in the Riviera Maya.

The free event runs through Saturday, Sept. 26, organizers announced at a press conference attended by Kandy Mendoza, head of the municipal Department of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, who represented the local government.

Officials Call for Citizen Participation

Mendoza said Playa del Carmen is a municipality in constant growth and transformation, making it necessary to pool efforts among authorities, businesses, organizations and families.

“The convention represents a space to listen to concerns and share solutions, but above all to promote citizen participation as an agent of change,” she said.

Organizers said the gathering aims to advance the Riviera Maya’s transition toward a sustainable model by strengthening comprehensive waste-management strategies, promoting inclusive recycling, building local alliances and reducing the environmental impact on the region’s ecosystems.

Limited Capacity and a Disposable-Free Format

Attendance is capped, and organizers are asking those interested to pre-register through the event’s official social media accounts. As part of its environmental commitment, the convention is a disposable-free event, and attendees are asked to bring their own thermos, cup or mug.

The press conference also featured Liane Aké Canto, director of environmental regulation and sanitation; Luis Acosta Quian, president of the local chapter of Canacintra, the national manufacturing industry chamber; and Josafat García Moreno of the Planetario Sayab. Representatives of partner organizations and the organizing committee attended as well, among them Maremex, Mi Ruta del Reciclaje, Raíces Circulares, Jaal Káak Náab, Maya Verde and La Merced.
