Mob Nearly Lynches Suspected Robber in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man suspected of robbing a woman at knifepoint was nearly lynched by residents in Cancun’s Region 223 neighborhood before police arrived, authorities said.

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect threaten the woman with a box cutter and steal her belongings. Several neighbors chased him down, beat him, and tied his hands and feet to prevent escape, according to officials.

Residents called 911 and reported the capture. Police officers arrived and took the suspect into custody, handing him over to the State Prosecutor’s Office.

According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, 411 street robberies were reported in Quintana Roo between January and May of this year.
