Mara Lezama Launches ‘Mundial Social 2026’ Project to Build New Soccer Facilities in Bacalar

Governor Mara Lezama and local officials inspect construction of soccer fields in Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, accompanied by Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez, inspected the progress of sports infrastructure projects in the municipality under the federal “Mundial Social 2026” initiative. The program invests more than 65 million pesos (about $3.6 million) in 46 sports spaces across Quintana Roo.

At the Serapio Flota Mass Sports Complex, Lezama highlighted that Bacalar will host the “Social World Cup,” a public policy promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to bring the World Cup experience to neighborhoods, towns, and Magical Towns across the country.

Current projects include the construction of a five-a-side soccer field at the Municipal Sports Center, the rehabilitation of a seven-a-side soccer field at the Serapio Flota Mass Sports Complex, and improvements to a multi-purpose court at the Colonia Colosio dome.

“The goal is to bring the World Cup celebration to the entire community, beyond the stadiums,” Lezama said. “That’s why we are very happy, many thanks to the Secretariat of Territorial Development of the federal government, to the President, and to this great team.”

Officials reported that the DIF (Family Development System) will help organize events, along with a celebration on the municipal esplanade so that everyone can enjoy the sports festival.

The works include earthmoving, layout and leveling, installation of synthetic turf, storm drainage, regulation goals, sports lighting, and perimeter fencing to ensure user safety.

“These fields will be ready and equipped for the ball to roll here in Bacalar,” Lezama and Contreras Méndez added. They were accompanied by Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ).
