Man Claims He Escaped Kidnapping, Seeks Help at Puerto Aventuras Shopping Center

Crime in Puerto Aventuras shopping plaza

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A man who appeared injured and distressed prompted a police and emergency response Sunday night after arriving at Multiplaza Puerto Aventuras and claiming he had escaped from an alleged kidnapping.

According to preliminary local reports, the man reached the shopping center barefoot, shirtless, and with visible injuries to his face and body. He reportedly approached private security staff at the plaza and asked for help, saying he had been deprived of his liberty by several people and had managed to escape shortly before reaching Puerto Aventuras.

Security personnel activated emergency protocols and called 911, triggering a response from police and medical personnel. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and determined that his injuries were minor and did not appear to be life-threatening.

The incident caused concern among shoppers, workers, tourists, and visitors at the plaza, where the arrival of police units and emergency responders drew attention in a normally busy commercial area along the federal highway corridor.

According to unofficial versions circulating locally, the man told responders he had been “levantado,” a term commonly used in Mexico to describe being taken by force, in the Akumal area. He reportedly said he escaped while the vehicle in which he was being transported was traveling along Federal Highway 307 near Puerto Aventuras.

Akumal is located south of Puerto Aventuras along the same highway corridor, making the area between the two communities a common transit route for residents, workers, tourists, and service vehicles moving between Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum.

Local reports also stated, unofficially, that the man had alcohol on his breath when he arrived at the plaza. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether that detail is part of the formal investigation, and it does not change the need to verify his allegations through official channels.

Elements of the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana responded to the scene and partially secured the area while investigative police took initial statements and began the corresponding inquiries. As of the latest available reports, authorities had not confirmed the identity of the man, the number of alleged suspects, whether a vehicle had been located, or whether any arrests had been made.

The case remains under investigation, and officials will need to determine whether the man’s account is supported by evidence, witness statements, surveillance footage, medical records, or additional reports from Akumal and the highway corridor.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity around security issues in the Riviera Maya, where reports of violence or alleged abductions can quickly spread online before official information is available. For that reason, authorities typically urge the public to rely on confirmed updates and avoid sharing unverified details that could interfere with an investigation or create unnecessary alarm.

For now, what is confirmed through preliminary reporting is that a visibly injured man sought help at Multiplaza Puerto Aventuras, emergency services were called, and police opened an investigation into his claim that he had escaped from an alleged kidnapping.
