Judge Binds Over Driver in Fatal Cancún Motorcycle Crash

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A judge has formally charged a driver accused of causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Cancún earlier this month, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office said.

The agency said in a statement that Luis Ariel “N” was bound over to trial on a charge of negligent homicide, known in Mexico as homicidio culposo, in connection with the Sept. 12 collision in the municipality of Benito Juárez.

A control judge issued the ruling after reviewing evidence presented by prosecutors, who did not release the identity of the man who died.

Crash on Avenida Niños Héroes

According to the initial investigation, the victim was riding a motorcycle on Avenida Niños Héroes when he reached the intersection with Calle 71 in Supermanzana 229, where his vehicle collided with a Renault driven by Luis Ariel “N”.

Prosecutors allege the driver moved into the motorcyclist’s right-of-way lane without taking proper precautions, causing the impact.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the chest.

As part of the investigation, forensic experts completed a specialized traffic-accident analysis that concluded the driver was likely responsible for the crash.

After weighing the evidence, the judge ordered Luis Ariel “N” held in pretrial detention for one year while the investigation and criminal proceedings continue.
