Holbox Island, Quintana Roo — Holbox Island reached full occupancy during the Easter week holiday period, according to local officials who simultaneously ramped up environmental protection measures for the ecologically fragile destination.
Nivardo Mena, mayor of Lázaro Cárdenas municipality, reported the 100% occupancy rate while emphasizing that authorities maintained cleanup operations despite the high tourist influx. “Holbox is a very fragile island… the most important thing is that we have both human and machinery capacity to clean the island and always leave it in optimal condition,” Mena stated.
The mayor noted that the priority during the holiday season was ensuring adequate conditions for both visitors and residents without neglecting the natural environment. Cleanup and waste management operations remained active to handle the constant garbage generation from tourism activities.
Mena acknowledged that sanitation continues to be one of the main challenges due to the volume of waste produced in a high-demand destination. “We haven’t let our guard down… it hasn’t been easy due to resources, but we will continue working to keep the island in good condition,” he emphasized.
Regarding infrastructure, Mena revealed that initial-stage projects are underway to strengthen services on the island, including construction of a public security building and a fire station, both currently under technical review for land use considerations.
He also highlighted that electricity supply remains stable thanks to backup lines from the mainland and available emergency generators.
Finally, the mayor mentioned that sports projects are being promoted in the municipality, such as the construction of futsal courts, in coordination with the federal government led by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
