Tulum, Quintana Roo — Construction has begun on the oval track for the NASCAR Mexico Series race scheduled for April 2026 at Tulum International Airport, where it will coincide with the Tulum Air Show.
Workers started assembling the oval this week at a camp located two kilometers from the construction site. The final concrete barrier sections, called dovelas, were transported using a special crane to platforms that hold four sections each due to their weight and size. From there, a forklift moves them to their positions along the perimeter of the oval.
“Each dovela has attachment points at the ends where schedule 40 pipes will be installed,” said Mario Ruisánchez. “These pipes will extend two meters above the barriers to support cyclone mesh fencing, reinforced with steel cables every forty centimeters.”
Currently, 25 local workers are involved in the oval construction, with 20 more expected to join this weekend to complete preparations before the race. “This shows the contribution NASCAR Mexico Series is making to the state through local employment,” Ruisánchez added.
NASCAR Mexico Series Director Jimmy Morales described the upcoming Tulum 100 race as an innovation in motorsports. “Not only will the best Mexican drivers compete, but we also have confirmations from international competitors,” he said. Morales compared the April 25-26 event to a Roman circus where chariots thrilled crowds with close racing and collisions, but now with modern cars producing over 400 horsepower.
The Tulum Air Show 2026 will run from April 23-26 at Military Air Base No. 20 (Tulum International Airport), featuring free aerial displays, acrobatics by the Mexican Air Force’s “Águilas Aztecas” team, and parachute demonstrations. The main events on April 25-26 will include family exhibitions, aeronautical displays, and social activities.
Event highlights include free admission to the air show, the “Guerreros Águila” parachute team, and aircraft exhibitions. While the air show is free, registration is recommended for designated areas. The weekend also includes the NASCAR Mexico Series race, which requires paid admission.
From April 23-24, an International Air Safety Congress will be held alongside the launch of FAMEX 2027. The event aims to establish Tulum’s new airport as a tourism and aviation hub for the Mexican Caribbean.
