Gunmen Attack Bar El Pretexto in Playa del Carmen, No Injuries Reported

Police officers cordon off the area outside Bar El Pretexto after a shooting attack in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the facade of Bar El Pretexto on Wednesday night, the latest in a series of attacks on businesses in this tourist city. No injuries were reported.

The attack occurred around 10 p.m. at the sports bar located on Avenida 115 between Avenidas 28 de Julio and Solidaridad, according to officials. Witnesses said the suspects arrived on a motorcycle, fired multiple shots at the entrance, and fled.

Diners and staff inside the bar scrambled for cover as shots rang out, and several people left the premises in panic. Bar managers called emergency services, and police arrived to secure the area.

Investigators found 17 spent shell casings — 10 on the street, four near the door, and three projectiles that struck the main entrance. Paramedics were not needed as no one was hurt.

The attack occurred about 100 meters from Bar El Congo, which was also targeted by gunfire last week. Local authorities believe these shootings are linked to extortion attempts, known locally as “derecho de piso,” and are intended as warning messages.

Playa del Carmen has seen a series of armed attacks on bars and restaurants in recent months, keeping business owners and residents on edge.
