Tulum, Quintana Roo — A group of citizens and independent promoters have announced a free spay-neuter campaign for dogs and cats, set for May 23-24 at the Escuelita Arrecifes, aiming to reduce the stray animal population in the municipality.

The event will be free of charge but has limited capacity. Organizers ask interested residents to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 984 449 6107.

According to the announcement, the initiative responds to a growing number of homeless animals in Tulum, a concern frequently raised by local groups and residents.

Organizers said sterilization is one of the main tools to control reproduction, prevent diseases, and improve the quality of life for pets. They also emphasized that such actions promote responsible pet ownership by preventing unwanted litters that often lead to abandonment.

The campaign organizers called on the public to participate by bringing their pets or sharing the information to expand the event’s reach.

The effort is part of a citizen-led response to a problem that continues to grow in the municipality due to limited coverage of permanent animal control programs.
