Riviera Maya School Authorized to Offer International Baccalaureate Diploma

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Families in the Riviera Maya will no longer need to send their teenagers outside the region to pursue an International Baccalaureate diploma.

Colegio Internacional Alemán de la Riviera Maya, located inside Tulum Country Club near Akumal, has received authorization to offer the IB Diploma Programme beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

The school says it is the first in the Riviera Maya authorized to offer the two-year diploma program. Its new status is confirmed in the International Baccalaureate’s worldwide school directory, which lists CIARM as authorized for the Diploma Programme.

The designation may be particularly significant for the region’s large international community. The IB diploma is used by schools around the world and recognized by universities in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Europe and elsewhere, although individual institutions set their own admission and credit policies.

“Having the Diploma Programme strengthens our students’ opportunities to apply to universities around the world, something especially valuable for a community as international as the Riviera Maya,” school director Ezequiel Conesa said.

What the IB Diploma involves

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is designed primarily for students ages 16 to 19 and is completed during the final two years of secondary education.

It is considerably more than a set of advanced classes. Students normally study six subjects, combining standard-level and higher-level courses. They must also complete three core components: Theory of Knowledge, an independent extended essay and Creativity, Activity, Service projects.

Assessment combines work completed at school with examinations and other evaluations administered or moderated through the international organization. The aim is to develop research, analytical writing, critical thinking and time-management skills before students enter university.

First students begin this school year

CIARM said its first Diploma Programme students can begin during the current academic year, placing the inaugural class on track to graduate in 2028.

Receiving authorization required teacher training, curriculum development and a review of the school’s academic systems. Schools must demonstrate that they have the staff, policies, facilities and long-term commitment needed to deliver the program before they can describe themselves as authorized IB World Schools.

The International Baccalaureate was established in Geneva in 1968. It now works with more than 6,000 schools in over 160 countries and territories.

Álvaro Moya, country manager for Tulum Country Club, said the school’s location within the development does not limit enrollment to residents. “The Colegio Internacional Alemán Riviera Maya is part of the comprehensive offering that gives us a unique character, and being open to the entire region expands its impact beyond our community,” Moya said.

That distinction matters locally. The campus sits at kilometer 250 of Highway 307 in the Akumal area, making it potentially accessible to families from Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Tulum and surrounding communities.

The school offers education from early childhood through high school with instruction in Spanish, English and German, according to its official academic information.

Other IB authorizations are still pending

The new approval applies specifically to the Diploma Programme. It does not mean that CIARM is already authorized to offer the complete IB curriculum at every grade level.

The school is currently a candidate for the Primary Years Programme, designed for younger students. A consultation connected with that process is planned this year. CIARM also expects to pursue authorization for the Middle Years Programme, which generally covers students ages 11 to 16, beginning next year.

Candidate status does not guarantee approval. Each program requires a separate authorization process and evaluation by the International Baccalaureate.

If CIARM eventually receives all three authorizations, it would be able to offer a continuous IB pathway from primary school through graduation. For now, the major change is at the high-school level: Riviera Maya students can pursue the internationally recognized diploma without leaving the region.
