Foreign Tourist Drowns in Pool at Xcaret Resort in Riviera Maya
Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A foreign tourist died after drowning in a pool at the Xcaret hotel complex in Riviera Maya, authorities said.
According to preliminary reports, children at the scene discovered the victim and alerted their mother, who notified hotel staff. Emergency services were called, and private ambulance paramedics arrived minutes later. They attempted resuscitation but the tourist showed no vital signs.
The State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) has launched an investigation into the incident. Hotel management did not immediately report the death to local authorities, and the body was taken to a hospital in the city.
The incident has drawn criticism over the company’s handling of such tragedies. Sources said the resort typically seeks to remove guests or visitors from its facilities as quickly as possible when deaths occur, in an effort to avoid media coverage.
The FGE is investigating the exact circumstances of the drowning, placing the resort group under scrutiny once again as one of the most controversial recreational centers in the Riviera Maya.
