Tulum, Quintana Roo — Environmental authorities confirmed the first sea turtle nest of the season on the municipality’s beaches, marking the start of the nesting period along the coastline.

Rocío Peralta Galicia, coordinator of the Kanan A’ak Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program, announced the discovery during routine patrols.

One key area of activity is Punta Piedra, where loggerhead turtles have historically nested, making it a focal point for conservation efforts.

Seven programs are currently operating in Tulum to protect sea turtles, focusing on locating and safeguarding nests, relocating them to safe areas, and setting up incubation corrals. The city’s Sustainability and Environment Department coordinates these efforts.

Experts warn that tourism remains a threat, particularly due to foot traffic on beaches and artificial lighting at night.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to respect marked areas, avoid handling nests, and reduce light use along the coast.
