Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado on Monday inaugurated the Baaxlo’ob Paalalo’ob summer camp “Deportilandia 2026,” a program aimed at promoting physical activity, healthy coexistence, and child development during the school break.
The event, held at the Poliforum of the Playa del Carmen Sports Complex, drew 320 children — 260 from Playa del Carmen and 60 from Puerto Aventuras — along with 30 trained monitors.
“Wouldn’t it be great to put down the technology, the cell phone, and the iPad for a while?” Mercado asked the children and their families during the ceremony.
The mayor urged participants to respect their instructors and enjoy activities including soccer, basketball, and swimming, as well as recreational exercises designed to strengthen values and social skills.
Alberto López Castro, director of the Municipal Sports Institute, said the monitors received training from civil protection, the DIF (family development agency), and other municipal departments to ensure the safety and care of all participants. The camp runs through July 31.
Mercado also distributed uniforms to children and instructors in a symbolic ceremony.
